What is Repetitive Strain Injury
Repetitive strain injury can affect sufferers in different ways,
but at its worst RSI can be a debilitating condition that can have
a devastating effect on both work and family life.
Repetitive strain injury, or RSI, is used as a blanket term to
describe many different conditions, including carpal tunnel
syndrome, tendonitis and tenosynovitis. Symptoms of a repetitive
strain injury typically appear within six months and include:
- Discomfort when carrying out a particular task, which
disappears when you stop
- Loss of strength and coordination in the hands
- Short bursts of excruciating pain in the arm, back, shoulders,
wrists, hands, or thumbs (typically diffuse - i.e. spread over many
areas)
- The pain is worse with activity
- Weakness, lack of endurance
Causes of Repetitive Strain Injury
RSI can be caused by the following activities:
- Reading books while looking down
- Working in front of computers
- Cradling one's phone between neck and shoulder
- Excessive awkward use of the hands, wrists, back, neck,
etc
- Not taking enough work breaks
While repetitive strain injury is most commonly associated with
those who work on a computer, workers of factory assembly lines,
musicians and dressmakers can also suffer from this condition.
