Dog Bite and Animal Attacks
The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was introduced to protect the public
from aggressive dogs. If the dog is of a known dangerous breed, the
dog should be registered and the owners have a responsibility to
make sure that their dog is under control in public.
However, according to the NHS statistics, there are still almost
4000 dog bites reported each year and this number continues to
rise.
Although dog bite attacks are the most common type of animal
attack, there are many documented cases of injuries sustained by
horses kicking and, more rarely, cat attacks.
If you or your child have been attacked by an animal and
sustained injury as a result, regardless of whether the injuries
were either physical or psychological, you could be entitled to
claim compensation.
As with any other accident claim, you can claim compensation
from the owner of the animal that attacked you if you were not at
fault. This compensation can include any loss of income, medical
expenses and any physical and/or psychological scarring you
experienced.
How long to claim?
For an adult, your claim must be made within three years of the
date of the animal attack. If, however, it was your child who
suffered from a dog bite or animal attack, you have 3 years from
their 18th birthday to claim compensation.
